Nail fungus, medically known as onychomycosis, digests keratin. Keratin is the protective layer of the nails, hair, and skin. When nail fungus attacks, the keratin begins to over produce and creates an extra amount, which essentially causes the nail to separate from the nail bed. This is very dangerous because not only are your nails beginning to lift and detach from its surfaces, it is also providing an entrance for fungi to come infect the nail and skin.
The best way to protect this keratin layer of your nails is to be cautious of the overall hygiene of your nails. Make sure if you frequent nail salons to bring in your own instruments and/or make sure their instruments are disinfected. Keep the nails as clean and dry as possible at all times. If you have a frequent sweating issue, apply a shoe spray to the inside of your shoes daily. After showering or leaving a pool make sure to dry the feet immediately of any moisture. Furthermore, it is important that if you have had the fungus before or are seeing signs of one to use an antifungal nail lacquer that serves as a protective shield.
If left untreated, onychomycosis can attack other nails and eventually spread to other parts of the body, which were otherwise healthy. Make sure to see your doctor if your nails appear discolored, abnormally thick, if you have swelling on the skin surrounding the nail, or you have a nail which appears to have separated from the nail bed.
